we are delighted to announce the web residency programme 2022 of the austrian national library! deadline (extended!) for submission is 19 april 2022, the residency runs for 6 weeks from 25 april 2022.

artistic approaches of all formats, whether they might be digital, physical, sculptural, poetic or conceptual are encouraged; the only requirements are that the final result needs to be exhibited online and relates to the ONB labs collections of the call.

selected projects will be supported with a fee of 850 euro for the final artwork.

project call

we invite artists to submit a proposal for a six-week web residency project related to our digital collections of "wiener zeitung" (1780-1881) and/or of aerial photographs from the 1930s "österreich aus der luft". the proposed project should aim for a critical and creative engagement with data sets from the onb labs, culminating in a web-based work that will be exhibited online in the onb labs artspace.

artistic approaches of all formats, whether they might be digital, physical, sculptural, poetic or conceptual are encouraged; the only requirements are that the final result needs to be exhibited online and relates to the onb labs collections of the call. all formats are accepted: text, picture, video, animation, etc.

submit your application as pdf including:
    •    short bio of artist or description of art collective (up to 500 words)
    •    short portfolio with up to 10 pages (images, text, links)
    •    short project outline (up to 500 words, incl. images)
selected projects will be supported with a fee of 850 euro for the final artwork.
two projects will be selected; individuals or collectives can apply, but the fee will remain the same for collectives.

timeline
    •    deadline for submissions is april 19th 2022, 12:00am (midnight) cet (arrival time)
    •    selected candidates will be informed by: april 26th 2022
    •    web residency period: 6 weeks starting from may 2nd 2022

application

the selection will be made by the onb labs team in cooperation with the artist and educator seth weiner and the artist heike fiedler. seth weiner is currently the artistic director of the palais des beaux arts wien and has taught at kunst universität linz, academy of fine arts vienna, academy of applied arts vienna and webster university vienna among others.

in cooperation with the vienna poetry school, the poet, performer, author, sound & visual artist, musician heike fiedler could also be won as a juror. she regularly performs at poetry and music festivals, was a fellow of the geneva fund for contemporary art, published works in numerous magazines and anthologies, and led a performance class at the vienna poetry school.

the selected artists will have the opportunity for two dedicated work sessions with seth weiner to discuss their work. they will further receive technical support from the onb labs technical staff.

the work sessions with seth weiner will be held in english. applications can be submitted in either english or german.

applications can be exclusively submitted via email to labs@onb.ac.at (subject: "web residency 2022"). please send application files in a single zipped archive with a maximum size of 10 mb. for archives larger than 10 mb provide a wetransfer link to your application data within the email.
