4th eacwp flash fiction contest - the winner is...

4th eacwp flash fiction contest - the winner is...

the winner of the 4th eacwp (european association of creative writing programmes) flash fiction contest is:

"the caretaker" ("a encarregada")

every morning, albertina opens the gate, even if no visitors come. she sweeps the trails       between the lots, gathers fallen leaves in a pile next to the shed and opens cans of tuna for the neighborhood cats.

then, she sits on the little plastic stool in the admission booth, with her celebrity gossip magazine. just for the sake of conversation, not to read.

every morning, they come, curious, lurking over her shoulder by the window and whispering to her: “what’s out there?”

“nothing,” albertina replies, annoyed, without lifting her eyes from the magazine. and one by one, resigned, they return to their graves.


points were awarded according to the eurovision songcontest voting system.

2nd place: "army of trees" by signe kierkegaard cain (den)
3rd place: "akureyri" by sofie gisslén (swe)

4th place: "bicycle" by geert simonis (bel) and "grandpa" by jilly naaijen (ned) (winner of the online voteing)
5th place: "medusa" by asaf dvori (isr)

congratulations to the winner and all finalists!

from 26 february to 30 april 2021 a total of 2,000 texts from across europe were submitted to the 4th eacwp flash fiction contest. the jury for the final round (in addition to the public voting) consisted of representatives of the 13 participating eacwp institutions. for the vienna poetry school, the poet peter waugh (gbr/aut) acted as juror.
the winner of the german language round was barbara kobalt (vienna) with her text "every day".
