"a sentimentalist", wrote oscar wilde, "is one who desires to have the luxury of an emotion without paying for it." although we quite like this sardonic quote, we would prefer to introduce a sentence by nick cave for our class: "in order to write heart-melting songs one should be of good mental health".
the class deliberately wants to "move", to produce texts and songs that counter postmodern irony with empathy in minor. part of our parcel: robert burtons "anatomy of melancholy" as well as the big sorrow-ballads from billie holiday to ... stefan remmler?
most beautiful compliment at the end: the audience thinks our songs had been written in the saddest minor keys. but everything is in c-major. strength through melancholia!
poetry language: german. but english is also possible.
