pata physical encounters
from the programme:
a one-week creative collaboration between students of creative writing artez (the netherlands) and students of akademie der bildenden künste and schule für dichtung.
departing from their practices as artists and poets, mihret kebede (akbild) and maartje smits(artez), propose this exchange between the students of their institutes and the city of vienna.
this program starts on the 6th of june 2023 and has daily activities inside and outside of institutions. mihret kebede and maartje smits will guide the students in working on a collective performance. during the week, additional lectures/performances/meetings with ruby sircar, tomash schoiswohl, sfd-teachers raphaela edelbauer & orhan kipcak and irene lucas(amongst others) are organized for all participants.
nowadays people connect and interact very often via their devices. we get to know each other through the platforms we consume and share. this way of connecting may seem low key but has its own restrictions. being new in a city like vienna can be tough. installing a dating app may seem like a quick fix to meet people, but true connections ask for different, more physical actions.
during this weeklong project the students will, together and individually, explore the city and look for ways to get in touch with random people on the streets. asking for directions can become a work of art, as we’ve learned from artist stanley brouwn. mihret kebede once exchanged new shoelaces with old ones of passersby on the streets of addis ababa as an intervention of a sudden change imposed on the people following a city transformation plan; as a way to regain grip on a city in heavy gentrification. through trial, experiment, and error we hope to create a toolbox for connecting beyond barriers. not digitally, but physically, making connections through our bodies, voices, objects, and any possible forms of communication that the students can think of. this process will be documented in sound, visuals, memories, and objects, and of course in any language. sunday the 11th of june is the final day of our week together with a closing collective performance.
