6th eacwp flash fiction contest – the winners

the winner of the 6th eacwp (european association of creative writing programmes) flash fiction contest has been chosen:

three across ("drie horizontal")
von davy d'halluin (bel)

he wraps himself in yesterday’s words.

a length of newspaper around his body and under his blanket. works fine as insulation against the gasps of a chilly night in february. he believes the sports pages are the warmest.

daylight slithers out and in its place comes the tip-tap-tapping of red lacquer soles and bravura. under his head the puzzle page. three across: morbid mockery. someone has filled in ‘ironic’.

their pace quickens when they pass him. it isn’t just the darkness that keeps him hidden. what makes him invisible is the reluctance to look.

he corrects the answer: ‘cynicism’.

he closes his eyes to hunt down sleep.
