The Turning. Turn, turn, turn.

1. Your parents gather their small family and emigrate to the Antipodes because Australia doesn’t sound too different to Austria. But it was and still is.

2. At the age of reason, you reason, you leave on a ship to see your birthland. You study, work and fall in love. That love takes you where it will: north, south, east and west.

3. You marry in Vegas, now speaking German, and in Geneva a daughter is born. Bon Courage! You say as she leaves for Australia. Not so different, she says. But it is.

4. She marries in Sydney and the decision is made to join her when your Austrian partner of 51 years passes away.

5. Home is where the heart is people tell you, but what if it’s broken? All that remains is to pick up the pieces and carry on, no longer here but there.
