vienna poetry school
the vpa was founded in 1991 in vienna as an independent project of authors and first began to offer its educational program in 1992. the vpa organizes festival-like events, annual academies with classes, seminars, teacher conferences, readings, performances and student presentations.
the vpa poetry motto has been influenced by the energy created by the area of conflict between issues such as first language - foreign language, sophisticated cultures - disregarded cultures, as well as writing techniques and non-writing techniques. the act of teaching has been understood as an individual, artistic act in the tradition of sappho, josef beuys and the "talking poetics".
representatives of the three major postwar avant-gardist groups - poetes sonores, beats, wiener gruppe - have worked with our academy as well as falco, marlene streeruwitz, nick cave, blixa bargeld, pham thi hoai, inger christensen, the mayan poet humberto akabal, the film-maker and chef peter kubelka or the poet of the holy mushrooms - fernando rendun.
the vpa works in co-operation with the jack kerouac school of disembodied poetics in boulder (usa), the institute nguyen du in hanoi (vietnam), the escuela de poesia in medellin (col) and the project propost from barcelona (esp).
the classes, teacher conferences and lectures that were held up until 1996 were transferred to the digital world and are now held in form of internet-classes, lecture-downloads and chats within the framework of the virtual academy: http://www.sfd.at -or- http://www.poetryschool.net.
founders: sonja orator, christine huber, gertraud marinelli-koenig, christian loidl and christian ide hintze, who is also responsible for organization and management. co-director virtual academy: orhan kipcak.
